August 25, 2008 – Along with 34 other UPD organizations, the UP Aguman participated in the Grand Centennial Clean UP, a project that promotes a greater concern for a cleaner UP environment. It is spearheaded by the UP Haring Ibon and officially endorsed by the Office of Student Activities (Community Service). The said project also aims to determine which types of trash is produced in greater amounts by the UP community. Thus, proper measures can be promoted so the whole community can help contribute in keeping the campus cleaner.
All volunteer organizations drew lots on which areas in the whole campus they will clean. The AguPips were assigned to clean the AS Parking Lot area. Officers, members and applicants banded together to represent the organization and picked up and segregated the trash in the area. They were accompanied by a Team Leader and Haring Ibon representative, Matt Tamayo.
Haring Ibon coursed its invitation to Aguman through Fergie Panganiban (Kadaya 2005A), who was also a member of Haring Ibon. A week before the event, Vice President for Internals Acey Duarte, accompanied by a couple of residents, attended an orientation for the said volunteer work.
The coverage of the cleanup project was campus-wide, which included not only the academic building blocks but also the residential communities and even the vacant lot areas. After a day’s work, the UP Diliman campus was freed of more than 510 kgs (in mass) of garbage through the collective effort of all participating organizations. In the Aguman’s turf alone, a little more than 16 kgs of trash was recovered from the surroundings.
